An epidural is given with a catheter into the epidural space. A small catheter is then threaded through the needle into the space and the needle withdrawn. The catheter is left in placed and taped so that it does not move. The patient can then be given a continuous small amount of medication or be given a bolus dose when the patient begin to have pain. An epidural relaxes the pelvic muscles and the nerves are bathed in the local anesthetic medication which causes an insensitivity to pain. The receiver will still feel the pressure of the contractions and the urge to push. After the baby is born, the catheter is removed.
Great thing about epidural block during labor is allowing a mother to remain fully awake. Additionally, the baby should not be affected in any way. It is also possible to receive a "walking epidural," which still blocks the pain of labour, but leaves you with enough lower body strength and muscle to walk about. The combination of these two becomes much more affective than the two used separately.
While it has its disadvantages too. This anaesthesia may decrease blood pressure and in turn also slow the baby's heart beat. This maybe harmful to the newborn. Beside, in 1 of 100 patients who received epidural block might have possibility suffering for severe headaches due to leakage of spinal fluid.
I did lots of study about this medication since what i mentioned before my tolerance to pain is very limited. I am looking for a effective pain killer which enable me to go for a natural birth without have to cut my stomach to take out my baby. Anyway, I got many opinions from others where they wanted me to take the pain. I have no idea why they have such an opinion. It's not a bad thing for the mom to be, especially the first time mom to be to go for this pian killer rather than put themselve at the most suffering stage.
